#2001 BASE COAT
DESCRIPTION
SEALMARK #2001 (BASE COAT) is a water-based acrylic resin blend, thixotropic coating, containing aggregate and complex fillers that is used on prepared substrates as a base and leveling coat and foundation for Restoration Coating and the texture coating finish.
USES
SEALMARK #2001 (BASE COAT) is used to level the approved substrate to achieve the desired appearance and also to provide a durable, crack resistant foundation for the SEALMARK #2012 Series (FINISH / TEXTURE COATING). SEALMARK #2001 is the second step in achieving a total water and vapor barrier TEFS system. #2001 is also used as a
filler to cover and eliminate minor substrate imperfections. VOS and VOC compliant.
COVERAGE
The coverage rates for SEALMARK #2001 (BASE COAT) will vary slightly depending upon the substrate it is being applied to. Smooth, level surfaces and substrates such as Plywood, Foam, Smooth concrete Etc. and comparable existing stucco finishes will sustain an average of 22 sq.ft. per gallon (70 mil) when used with Sealmark Adhesive Primer and wall mesh over these substrates. Brick and block substrates will achieve 16 to 18 sq.ft. per gallon with Sealmark Adhesive Primer and wall mesh if the depths of the struck joints or rake joints are 3/16”. (Brick and Block applications require 2 coats of SEALMARK #2001 BASE COAT.) It is recommended to pull first coat tightly with trowel, then to smooth and level with second coat application.) *You may add and mix in up to 8 ounces of water per 5 gallon pail to achieve desired consistency for coverage and workability.
PROPERTIES
Drying Time - After application, the drying time of SEALMARK #2001 (BASE COAT) is dependent upon the ambient air temperature, relative humidity and thickness of coating. Under normal conditions (70°f / 55%R.H.) the acceptable drying time for system continuation is approximately 8 hrs. Under average conditions protect application from rain, and harmful weather for at least 24 hrs. SEALMARK #2001 (BASE COAT) develops full integrity in 4 days. Note! Addition of water will slow drying time
Working Time - After mixing, working time or manageable application time for SEALMARK #2001 is approximately 4 minutes depending upon the temperature and relative humidity. Under normal conditions, (70° f 55% R.H.) acceptable curing time for the continuation of application of the TEFS system is approximately 8 hrs. SEALMARK #2001 (BASE COAT) achieves a completely cured form in 24 - 48 hrs. depending upon the application thickness.
Water Vapor Transmission (ASTM E 96) Average Perm Rating of 1.47 (SEALMARK TEFS SYSTEM is waterproof)
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
FOR COMPLETE APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS SEE THE (TEFS WALL SYSTEM APPLICATION GUIDE)
Job Conditions - Air and surface temperature acceptable for the application of SEALMARK #2001 (BASE COAT) must be at least 40° F, and must remain so for a period of at least 24 hrs. Apply material only on clear days when relative humidity is less than 85% and temperatures and forecast are to remain above 40°F. Do not apply material when precipitation is imminent or forecast within the following 12 hrs. Allow sufficient drying time between coats (approximately 6-7 hrs), however high humidity and cool temperatures may necessitate additional drying time.
Protection - Temporary protection shall need to be provided for specified duration until (#2001) has achieved a completely cured state to protect from weather, natures elements and potential damage.
Substrate Preparation - Surfaces must be clean, dry, and properly coated with SEALMARK #2000-A (ADHESIVE PRIMER / SEALER) completely. Surface temperatures should be at least 39°F and surface areas are to be free from grease, dirt and other solvents that would interfere with the bonding of SEALMARK #2001 to SEALMARK #2000-A. All areas that were treated with SEALMARK #2000-A (ADHESIVE PRIMER / SEALER) and wall mesh are required to be set before application of SEALMARK #2001. Also any areas that were treated with (ADHESIVE PRIMER / SEALER) and wall mesh are to be completely covered with (BASE COAT) such areas need to be inspected accordingly. When applying system materials to concrete, brick, or concrete block ; pH of concrete or masonry must not exceed 9 . These substrates must age a minimum of 30 days before SEALMARK can be applied. Wash concrete block with a mild muriatic acid solution to neutralize pH. Thoroughly rinse solution off with clean water. If substrate is a wood material, slightly depress all butt joints and panel edges (you may use a side grinder to achieve this. Remove any sawdust or other contaminates from the substrate. Remember that SEALMARK cannot be used over any asphalt materials or any plastic materials such as polyethylene.
Mixing Procedures - Thoroughly mix SEALMARK #2001 (BASE COAT) material using a power drill and a Wind-Lock or Goldblatt mixer, at a rate not to exceed 400 rpm. Mix until smooth and creamy. (mix approximately 60 seconds to achieve this texture)
Application - Once (ADHESIVE PRIMER / SEALER) and wall mesh has set, apply #2001 (BASE COAT) to approved substrate using a hawk and trowel. Apply #2001 smooth and evenly to substrate. Walls with raked or struck mortar joints will require a second coat of #2001. Apply second coat only after first coat has cured thoroughly. If cracks in the substrate are 1/8” or larger you must fill with (2010 Seam filler/Surface leveler) and cover with reinforcing mesh. Locate any depressions using a darby, and fill depressions or irregularities with (BASE COAT). After application, allow to cure and dry to touch. After (BASE COAT) has dried, if necessary, remove trowel marks using a sharp taping knife or slightly rasp. All trim regardless of substrate or material shall be installed over dried in place base coat. Please refer to the Sealmark TEF System Application Manual for wall trim application directions. The applied thickness of SEALMARK #2001 (BASE COAT) should be approximately 70 mils. No mesh should be seen through the applied Base Coat.
Clean Up - Use soap and water for clean up. System materials are water-borne and are non-toxic. Prior to curing, system materials are water soluble. Clean up any spills, overspray, or residue of the system materials before they have time to set. Cured or dried system materials are not water soluble and may prove to be difficult to impossible to remove without damage to substrate or other materials upon which they have dried. Dispose of waste materials and empty containers into an approved waste disposal facility. Never dump materials into storm or sanitary sewers, nor into bodies of water.
STORAGE
SEALMARK #2001 (BASE COAT) must be stored in an continuous environmental temperature of at least 40°F or higher Storing in temperatures closer to normal room temperature (70°F) will result in easier application. ALWAYS AVOID FREEZING. Always store in tightly sealed container and away from direct sunlight.. Shelf life of all SEALMARK products are for a period of 12 months after products are manufactured.
CAUTIONS
As with any type of application, take the appropriate steps necessary to ensure that clean up of #2001 is achieved with minimal effort. This means properly tarp/secure application area as to prevent unintended application as product may prove to be difficult to remove. SOME WALL SUBSTRATES MAY HAVE BEEN COATED WITH A CLEAR SILICON WATER REPELLENT THAT WOULD ADVERSELY AFFECT THE ADHESION OF SEALMARK PRODUCTS. IF APPLICATION OF THE SILICON TREATMENT IS UNKNOWN; IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT A TEST APPLICATION BE APPLIED TO THE SUBSTRATE AND CHECKED AFTER CURING FOR ADHESION.
